If you follow me on Instagram you may already know I am in the beginning stages of a master bathroom renovation. Over the entire length of this (sure to be long) project I will be frequently writing posts so you can follow along. Right now I'm in the planning phase.
When we first moved into our house I had big plans to make it our home. The house was dated with some minor updates but none that appealed to me- to me the bones were good. I wanted to do a complete home makeover. Like my own version of HGTV's Fixer Upper.
In my mind I saw the house as I wanted it, but getting it to that point has been a slow process. Let's just say I'm on a one-room-at-a-time schedule and budget. Slowly I have been transforming our house into the home I had first envisioned.
Somehow the master bath and bedroom has been moved to the bottom of my todo list. Seriously I still have moving boxes in our bedroom and we have lived here almost two years... To me the master bedroom and bathroom are key rooms to a house. It is the special room and space you share as husband and wife.
With that being said there is nothing special about our bedroom or bathroom. I'm honestly ashamed to let anyone see it. The rest of my house is decorated with personal touches everywhere and in our room not one single thing is hanging on the walls, the bedding doesn't match, nothing is how I want it. Sad- just sad.
I made a promise to myself that I would change this in 2016 and I would make it my first home project of the year and I'm starting in the bathroom.
Our bathroom is pretty standard. It is an on-suite divided into two rooms. The vanity is in the first room. Well I guess you can call it a room?. There is no door separating this area from our bedroom. Then there is a door into the room with the shower and toilet. The shower is a shower/tub combo insert with a crack that has been repaired hideously and the vanity is just your standard builder basic blah. The floor is covered in linoleum that is stained. It truly is a sad room.
I have removed the wall paper, mirror, lights, and painted the vanity since we moved in but this bathroom still needs a lot of help.
I want our master bathroom to feel clean, fresh, airy, and open. I want it to also feel warm and cozy- like home.
So here is my plan:
- Gut the bathroom- removing the wall separating the two spaces, removing the shower/tub insert, removing it all!
- Put in a tile shower with frameless glass walls and door
- New vanity
- Shiplap
- Tile floor
- Recessed lighting
- New vanity lighting
- Antique Accents
As a designer I always treat my own projects as though it is a job. I sit down and sketch, research, and write out exactly what I want. Then I begin the design process with style boards. This is my current stage in this project. I don't know why but I always find it so much harder to design my own home. It takes me FOREVER to settle on the smallest of details.
And that is exactly where I'm at right now- the small details.
And this is one option I put together:
I'm still on the fence about the design. If this was going to be my forever home I wouldn't think twice about it, but we do not plan on living here forever. Part of me is saying this design is too buyer specific for when we do put our house on the market, but then part of me is saying go for it...
I'm going to come up with a few more design boards (one a little more traditional) then I will make my decision.
With love,
