Hello there friend! I have never shared our family room here on the blog. But after my funny Christmas tree story from my last home tour (Texas Chainsaw Massacre Edition), a lot of y'all were really wanting to see THE Miller family Christmas tree. You can read that story and see more of my Christmas decor- {HERE}. Since the tree went up in our family room I decided to give you a little tour around the room- well and I kind of promised y'all a tour too, and I'm a girl of my word.
To be completely honest the reason I've never shared this room is because it's different. It's like no other room in our house. It has pops of bright colors, mixed matched furniture from our previous house, and 99% of the time Bella's toys are covering the floor. But I've cleaned up the dog toys and fluffed the pillows to welcome y'all inside.
This room has undergone quite the transformation since we moved in. The day we moved in, this room had mint colored walls, and hunter green plush carpet. We painted the walls and ripped out the carpet to put down hardwood floors. We originally painted the walls a dark brown color- which I never really loved. So a few months ago I painted the walls again. I went with my go to farmhouse white- Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. Now this room feels so bright and blends a little more with the rest of the house.
We spend so much time in this room as a family. We watch movies, beige watch Netflix on lazy rainy Saturdays, and fight for a spot on the couch with Bella- she ALWAYS wins. This room is our cuddle/ pile on top of each other room. Just picture two adults and a Great Dane all three trying to lay "comfortably" on this couch. Maybe I'll share a picture one day.
I like to keep lots of blankets and pillows in here for cuddling up on the couch. I store extra pillows under the coffee table and blankets in wooden crates next to the tv table. The coffee table is something we built for an outdoor space at our previous house, and somehow it ended up inside as a coffee table.
This tree was somewhat of a challenge to decorate. If you read the story from my previous tour you know this is a real tree called a Leyland Cypress. The branches are so wispy and light they can not hold any bit of weight. Making it super difficult to add lights and ornaments. I wasn't able to use any of our normal family ornament because they were to heavy. So here's my tips on decorating a Leyland Cypress Christmas tree:
How to Decorate a Leyland Cypress Christmas Tree
- Start with adding your lights. Do not wrap them around the tree. This pulls the wispy branches in and it looks bad. Divide your tree into four vertical sections. Start adding lights at the bottom zig zagging your way up the tree in one section. You want to tuck the lights in and out as you go making sure you are not pulling in the wispy branches. The branches can hold a little more weight towards the center of the tree making it great for holding the lights in place. Repeat this for all 4 sections. I added a string of large bulbs last, to add a little extra pop of light here and there. I simple draped this strand in a zig zag pattern around the tree.
- Use light weight ornaments such as glass balls. Attach them with traditional wire ornament hooks, but press the hook together and wrap around the branch. This helps prevent them falling off.
- Use light weight garland and drape it around the tree.
- Add in floral sprigs. I used red berry sprigs. You are able to tuck them into the deeper branches of the tree that are more stable.
- Just keep it simple and let the trees beauty shine. And make sure to water it DAILY. No one likes a crunchy Christmas tree.
I normally have an over the top decorated tree in here with all our ornaments we've collected over the years. But things have a funny way of working out, because I'm so in love with how simple our tree is this year. You might be wondering where are our present are... Well that's because there isn't any YET. I'm a terrible procrastinator and still have not finish my Christmas shopping- and Christmas is in 5 days. UPS, Fedex, and my mail lady have pretty much been waiting in line to get in and out of our driveway. At this point I know them so well I feel like I need to buy them all a Christmas present. The floor under our tree is usually filled with beautifully wrapped presents with a curated theme of wrapping paper, bows, and tags. This year I'm going the gift bags and tissue paper route, that will be carefully curated by what gift bags Target still has available 4 or 5 days before Christmas.
This is my final room for my Christmas decor tours. I would say I will be spending the next few days sitting on this couch sipping hot coco and watching christmas movies. But... I still have presents to buy and gifts to wrap- or should I say, gifts to stuff in bags with pretty tissue paper. Thank you Jesus for Amazon Prime!! Are you all ready for Christmas or are you pushing it to the last few days like me?
As always thank you so much for stopping by today and reading my blog. I hope you found some inspiration for your holiday home.
