How is it already March?? This year has already began slipping through my fingers faster than a hot knife through butter. And with this 75+ degree weather we're having here in NC, I'm so ready for spring to go ahead and be sprung.. I mean seriously, I'm looking out my office windows to blooming redbud and bradford pear trees... IN MARCH. How'd that saying go... April showers bring May flowers?? That's cute and all, but I believe the saying needs an update. It's got me thinking, all that hype I learned in college about global warming... it just might be a real thing! It's also got me thinking, I just might could get a jump start on my flower garden this year. Because last year, well life happened, and a flower garden didn't happen. We just gained 2 whole months of planting season weather here in NC. So maybe this year I can fit it in my schedule.
But you know what comes along with spring time??? I'll give you a hint... it starts with a "C" and ends with "-something I hate doing." And if you think I'm talking about "cleaning" ding-ding-ding, you are correct.
Spring time is for cleaning... and refreshing your home. It's so wonderful to start this new beautiful season with a fresh and clean home. Here is a great link to Joanna Gaines' Free Spring Cleaning Check List {Click HERE}. I need to print these and get a jump start. After Christmas we take down all our cheery decorations and our homes often feel dull, lifeless, and drab. Clients always ask me how soon can they start decorating for spring. Well, if you live in NC, the answer to that question is January. Because spring done and went and sprung early. Just kidding.. But really it's here. Go ahead and bring out them springy florals.
Spring cleaning is a good time to think about your home decor and how to have "transitional decor." I know you're probably thinking what in the world is "transitional decor," but just keep reading because I have a feeling you're gonna like it.
A good place to start is ridding you home of clutter and starting with a fresh palette. This is a great way to start off your "home design" year. I like to consider the decor in my home to be transitional- meaning that it can transition from season to season throughout the year. Or in other words, I'm lazy, and cheap (not cheap... lets say budget friendly- yeah that sounds better), and lack storage for season after season of changing decor. I mean, how wonderful does decorating your house and leaving it up from more than 2 months sound?? Amazing right?? What if you could leave it up all year... AMAZING. Not only is it easy on YOU, it's much easier on your BUDGET.
If you're like me you don't have the time to be redecorating all the time. Lord bless those of you who change out your decor monthly!! I look up to you, and honor you. I seriously wish I had the time to do so. Because decorating in my own home is one of my favorite hobbies. Yes, it has turned into a "hobby," because hobbies are things we do for fun in our free time. Well guess what? I almost never have free time. So using "transitional decor" is what works best for me.
So I thought I would give you some tips on some ways you can too make your decor transitional this year.
1. Greenery- Most greenery can transition season to season throughout the year. For example, I leave my magnolia wreaths up year round. Those babies ain't never coming down. Pops of greenery help soften a space and add the tinniest wee bit of color. My favorite greenery is those with a muted soft green color. And my favorite greenery source is ... HOBBY LOBBY.
2. Wood Tones- You can add wood tones in many ways. Trays, candle sticks, small furniture, wood bead garlands, lamps, and so much more. I mean wood never goes out of season. So it's definitely transitional. My favorite way to add wood tones is with candle sticks and old architectural pieces. Again a great source for candle sticks is HOBBY LOBBY.
3. Lite and Airy Linens- Whether it be with pillows, throws, slip covers, bedding, or curtains. Adding nice white/cream linens to a space is transitional. You can keep them out year round. You can add depth and texture with linens of the same color. We all know my favorite colors are white, cream, and light grey. Shocker... I know. And HomeGoods is my go to for pillows and throws. Oh, and IKEA if you have one of those near you.
4. Keep it neutral- By keeping your decor base neutral you can make your transitions so much easier. Try using old books and metal in your decor also. Those two things are neutral and transitional.
With this transitional decor base you can make decorating your home so much easier on yourself. You have a decor foundation you can leave up all year!! Can I get a AMEN ALLELUIA!!
So now if you feel like decorating for Easter or the Fourth of July you have that base to add things to. Like little moss bunnies and mint colored eggs. And when that holiday passes and you take the bunnies away, you're not left with an empty decor hole. You got your ole faithful neutral/transitional decor base.
Designing your transitional home decor is all about that bass, "Because you know I'm all about that bass, 'Bout that bass." Sorry I just had too... Now I got ya singing right? Your base is your transitional decor you can leave up all year. And when you're craving that simplistic decor look, just strip everything down to that decor base. Which is pretty much the stage my house stays in due to my lazin... I mean my crazy schedule. But it still has that soft, warm, homey feel.
I hope this helped some of you that may be struggling keeping up in this home decor race we all seem to be living in lately. I also hope you can take my advise and establish your very own transitional decor base. And make your life just a little bit easier. Thank you so much for stopping by today and reading my blog. Also as always if you have any questions about anything just let me know! Also feel free to leave me a little comment letting me know how you like the idea of transitional decor.
